Shake Your Fist at the Heavens in the Midst of Dark Times and then Make a Heart at Your Heart

Updated: Jul 12

Yep, this planet is can be a hard, hard place to live. Sometimes when I am feeling weighed down by personal challenges and/or by the many horrible things happening around the world, with my face pointed upward as if to heaven, I say, “You try living down here!”

I am speaking to all those beings in other dimensions and domains outside this physical space-time continuum whom I believe are “out there” assisting us—though such assistance may seem at times nonexistent or ineffectual or simply intangible. Or I am trying to communicate to some place/space from which I came here and where I exist in my greater self. It does not matter what you believe or who you talk to—your soul, God, the Universe, Spirit, Angels, Ancestors, or just to something, something. Even if you don’t believe in any of this, don’t you still sometimes shake your fist at empty space and express your exasperation and even despair?

Yes, it is tough. Especially these days. It does seem as if the pressure has increased with climate change, more war, conflict zones, shootings of innocents, and authoritarianism escalating. Oh, and there is more on so many levels and in so many places where people are suffering. No real need to go through the long list. We all know what is out there on personal and group levels.

You may at times think it would be better to die or for the world to just end—solve it for yourself or for all of us in one fell swoop. Yes, I've been there.

Yet, even when I have one of those moments, for me, it never lasts a long time. Why? Because despite all of this, I continue to feel, see, sense, hear, and know a building frequency of peace—even in the midst of all this madness. This vision lives deep inside me, as if it is embedded in my bones and blood. I am convinced that I came here to be a peacemaker along with millions upon millions of people around the world.

My first real peacemakers “job” was to study the Soviet Union during the Cold War and to build relationships with Russians, both in Moscow and in my hometown. Of course, it was a career choice, but really, deep down I felt as if I was holding a space on the planet to bring an end to the dark vision of nuclear annihilation. I believed—and still believe—that the best path to peace is in building personal relationships across lines of conflict and difference. Then we can’t help but to humanize the face of the enemy. You are me and I am you.

In fact, strangely, when I was in Moscow on a post-doc the summer of 1991, I actually stood next to Nobel Peace Laureate Gorbachev quite by accident. I was walking behind the Kremlin and out of a back door emerged a bunch of men in dark suits. As I watched, mesmerized, he came towards a gathering crowd on the road and right up to me. There he was, his bald head stamped with a birthmark one foot away from me. I thought, how weird and yet how magical. It was like my reward because not more than 2 weeks later, the wall fell and the Cold War ended.

It worked! Peacemaking worked! Holding that vision worked! In 1991, one cycle of threat was done.

Now, I know some say given Putin’s invasion of Ukraine that the Cold War only went underground. Maybe so. But truthfully, I believe that this is the last gasp of the most egregious appearances of authoritarianism. It is as if those who are caught deep in the grip of this mind-state are trying again. Why? Because the light is building.

Even as I saw the former Soviet Union fail, I believe this latest experiment in fear will fail, as well. It will fail especially because there are people like you and me all over the world who are doing the inner and outer work of building a great wave of peace.

So, though you may find yourself at times shaking that fist at the heavens (or at whomever/wherever) because it’s just what you need to do in the moment to express all those messy feelings that are weighing you down, take a breath and feel into this Great Wave and make the symbol of a heart with your hands.

Do it now as you read this. For I am transmitting this energy to you RIGHT NOW so you can really FEEL it! We are powerful! Believe and breathe!
